The stadium was finished and first used in 1947, Real Madrid and Os Belenenses played the first game on the pitch. In 1953 the stadium expanded and the capacity reached a high of 120,000, sinse then there have been a number of changes due to modernisation and the capacity has dropped and now stands at 80,354.
